  16.      directory.  If _n_a_m_e does not exist, it is created as a directory.  If
  17.      _n_a_m_e does exist, _d_i_r_n_a_m_e is created as _n_a_m_e/_d_i_r_n_a_m_e.  _d_i_r_n_a_m_e and _n_a_m_e
  18.      can not be on the same path; that is, one can not be subordinate to the
  19.      other.  For example:
